Prize Pressing

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 KJV

Apostle Paul’s reference to pressing towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus suggests that another prize pressing in life and ministry is aimed at the low calling of men. Yes, the highest of life’s ambitions in family, career, politics, business, and sometimes even in ministries, if outside the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, are simply the low calling of men. When our motivation in any ambition is aimed at self glory, it becomes low calling and subject to possible discouragement and disappointment, whenever we confront opposition. Even while Apostle Paul was incarcerated despite the huge sacrifices he had made on the field, he kept pressing forward and forward for the high calling of God. It is one thing to discover the will of God in career, family, ministry and business pursuits; and it is completely another thing to pursue these ambitions with the prize pressing on the high calling of God’s glory; and not merely for self glory. And in order to finish the race set before us as believers in Christ Jesus, we must be prepared to engage in the prize pressing only for the actualization of the promises of God, no matter the challenges we confront in the race.
