Higher Heights
“But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” Luke 14:10-11 KJV
While the application can be readily misconstrued in the pursuit of higher heights, there is a significant difference between aspiration and arrogance in life. Considering the fact that life and its purpose for existence represent a given bid, the aspiration of everyone is powered through the focus of the heart by discipline and dedication to all the necessary activities to the achievement of goals. Despite the fact that these aspirations expect to lead to higher heights, the grasping of higher heights is the motivation of aspirations. Whereas, arrogant hearts are overtly concerned about the grasping of higher heights and positions of authority, particularly just for the show of ego. Therefore, on Christ’s correction of the Pharisees for their penchant for the grasping of higher heights or positions in public functions, “Friend, go up higher or please take the higher height” is always better than “Friend, come down lower or please take the lower level”. When we truly trust God who calls and commissions His children on life’s assignments, we will remain humble enough to deliver our life’s duties and responsibilities without the unnecessary distraction by the pursuit of higher heights. Those who wait patiently to be lifted to higher heights by humility have nothing to lose; but those who grasp higher heights by themselves with hostility often have nothing to gain.
