Fair Favour

But thou, O LORD, be merciful unto me, And raise me up, that I may requite them. By this I know that thou favourest me, Because mine enemy doth not triumph over me. And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, And settest me before thy face for ever.” Psalm 41:10-12 KJV

The context that supports the unfairness of God’s favour surely has its point. The righteous often suffer indiscriminately in the hands of wicked people and principalities; and God is believed to provide the enabling and extensive environment for this unfairness. And the right context of favour to the righteous in most circumstances is the unidirectional distribution of the mercy of God. Whereas, the fair favour of God looks both ways. Both the righteous and his enemies need the mercy of God, in terms of comfort and compassion respectively. When the enemies strike the righteous recklessly and relentlessly without triumphing over him, they get the fair favour of God calling them to repentance. On the other hand, the righteous is comforted by the abiding presence of the Lord in his moment of trials and affliction. In our world of wickedness and ungodly practices, the abiding presence of the Lord is practiced, like the Good Samaritan, through the consistent extension of compassion to everyone within our sphere of influence. Therefore, if we are privileged to appreciate the fair favour of God in all situations and circumstances, we will learn how to support even our oppressors and persecutors towards accessing the mercies of God.
