Holy Honour
“Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.” Numbers 24:11 KJV
Up until this point, the response of Balaam to Balak’s great honour was delightful to the LORD. But the end of Balaam showed how difficult and sincerely impossible it is for canal minds to resist great honours from the system of this world. After all, the essence of life’s activities in career, business, ministry, and family is the achievement of great honours; and who does desire company with failures? Balaam must have pondered so much on Balak’s offer of great honour to the extent of reneging on “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak? (Numbers 24:13)”. Obviously, the enemy of Baaam’s soul knew that he couldn’t keep his eyes away from Balak’s great honour, so he persisted until his prey was captured. But like Joseph of old, those who truly delight in God’s holy honour do not second gaze on this world’s great honour. They are always great horror or wickedness to say the least. Any honour from any quarter with the slightest invitation to disobey the commandment of the LORD has always been designed to deny the righteous from his birthright; if it isn’t holy, it isn’t great!
