“And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel. And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred. And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes. And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.” Numbers 10:29-32 KJV
From the benefits of hindsight, we know that Hobab believed the testimony “for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel” and followed faithfully. It just shows that good goings in life begat goodness gaining; while greedy goings begat grief gaining. Unfortunately, good goings are not the same as good starts. Many of the Israelites who received the same promise from the Lord and started the journey were distracted in the wilderness by discouragement, disobedience, murmuring, unbelief and disappointment. The Lord declared elsewhere that because of their unbelief, He vowed that they will not enter into His rest. If Moses could be denied physical access to the promised land because of his disobedience, believers are expected not to abuse the grace of God against heaven’s demand for faithfulness towards the goodness of God. Irrespective of life’s ugly happenings in our goings, God is good all the time...our faithfulness to good goings is always the only source of concern. Therefore, only those who faithfully followed “for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel” get to access “that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee” at the end of the race.
