Fair-weather Faith

“So Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land”...And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD””
‭‭Job‬ ‭1:9-10, 21‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Despite the display of ignorance in the theology of Job: “The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away”, his disposition showed the possession of a genuine faith in God. Whereas, many followers’ faith is hinged on job security, material prosperity, and social security. Under this fair-weather disposition, God is good only in fair weathers. But when the tide changes, many questions are generated than answers, mostly summarized in “where is God in all of these experiences?”. Unfortunately, the emotional outburst of fair-weather faith shows that the livelihood in God, and not the love of God, is in the heart. When it is only the livelihood in Christ that is resident in the heart, the opportunity cost is always the denial of the person of Christ or faith in times of difficulties. Notwithstanding, “Blessed be the name of the LORD” is always the song of all-weather believers in the faithfulness of God.
