Wicked Wealth

“And it happened on the next day that Pashhur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD has not called your name Pashhur, but Magor-Missabib. For thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon and slay them with the sword.” ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭20:3-4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ http://bible.com/114/jer.20.3-4.nkjv
Life is always good with the abundance of useable wealth for an improvement of the standard of living. However, the experience is not the same when wealth uses life with apparent neglect of the purpose for living. Pashhur’s life in the text was obviously improved with his position and authority as the Priest and chief Governor. But when his position and authority trampled down the worthwhile words of God, it became obvious that his standard of living had terrorized his purpose for living. If the pursuit of wealth in life is primarily for an improvement in the standard of living, then human existence is aimless and a recipe for terrorizing the purpose of God. Unfortunately, Pashhur’s life and ministry served doom to his life, family and friends. Whereas, he occupied the position of treasure and security to all people within his sphere of influence. Obviously, the treasure in wealth is not in a fruitless improvement of the standard of living, but in the focussed achievements of the purpose for living.
