Triumphant Treaty

And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him: “Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the Lord your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars.”II Chronicles 16:7, 9 NKJV

By all human standards, over 87% reign of righteousness and loyalty to God of king Asa’s 36 years out of 41 years reign over Judah represents an excellent performance. Unfortunately, in Gods assessment, he failed and was assessed foolishness: “In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars”. Compared with king David, Asa started very well and reigned longer than David; but even while God chastised him with wars and diseases in the last 5 years of his reign, pride prevented his repentance and restoration to God. It is instructive to note that the fundamental cause of Asa’s backsliding is his treasonable treaty with the king of Syria for protection. After a very long enjoyment of the reign of peace, he lost the secret of maintaining peace through loyalty and fellowship with God. Little wonder why many believers today in their states of affluence and prosperity lose the weapon of their warfare. Whenever fasting and prayer have become a poor man’s strategy of engagement, a treasonable treaty with worldliness, human understanding, and excellent public relations must have been executed to every believer’s backsliding. Whereas, a triumphant treaty remains a consistent fellowship with God through a devoted trust in His words and a dedicated loyalty in the secret place of prayer to Him.
