True Touch

Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him. So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.” Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly.” Mark 8:22-25

It makes all sense for any man to give up a contest for the touch of love and affection to women in the family. Even the scriptures attest to the uniqueness of mothers’ touch when it says “Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? (Isaiah 49:15)”. Notwithstanding, the fundamental principle of true touch is the sacrificial love and the loss of self in service rendering. True touch must make a difference or impression in the touch substrate. For example, when the touch of Jesus first made the “I see men like trees, walking” impression out of the blind man, Jesus gave another touch until “he was restored and saw everyone clearly”. It shows that true touch can be measured by the consistency of touch until the noticeable impression is made. Sometimes, this noticeable impression comes with loss of energy, personal ambition, and the forfeiture of preferences of the giver. A Sister once said about Mother Teresa’s true touch through her deformed feet “Her feet are deformed because we get just enough donated shoes for everyone, and Mother does not want anyone to get stuck with the worst pair, so she digs through and finds them. And years of doing that have deformed her feet. Years of loving her neighbour as herself deformed her feet.” The true touch in life is not made by what the hand carries; but what impressions the hand leaves behind in the lives of others.
