Reliable Refuge

Look on my right hand and see, For there is no one who acknowledges me; Refuge has failed me; No one cares for my soul. I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living.” Psalms 142:4-5 NKJV

Haman had earlier boasted in his reliability on “Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!” (Esther 6:11) until it was discovered that the reliability of the King of kings is better. He was made to finally bow down before Mordecai, who had fatally offended him, for his uncompromising allegiance to the Creator of Heaven and earth. Since human reliability is always a game of visible dependability, it is common for anyone to put his confidence in the superiority of status, potentiality of political powers, and the wisdom of wanton wealth. Unfortunately, this carnal reliability does not often recognize the sovereignty of the heavenly King, who is capable of turning the hearts of earthly kings at will. But like the psalmist on the perfect understanding of our reliable refuge, let the righteous always take the stand “I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living””. The living God is the reliable refuge of the righteous, a dependable portion and a very present help in times of need.
