Favourable Forgetting

”Then he restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand. Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.“ ‭Genesis‬ ‭40‬:‭21‬, ‭23‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Anyone can readily expect favour from man as the best remuneration for good works; but sometime, the absence of human favour can be the best favour from God. Unfortunately, in times of human disfavour, the heart of man can be easily cracked up with bitterness, discouragement, and all kinds of negative emotions. At any of such instances, human disfavour or mistreatment is readily blamed as being responsible for the eventual misfortune and a possible negative occurrence; but they are not ultimately responsible. The heart of man is always the architect of its own failure, by replacing the favour of God with human favour. Even while the butler forgot the goodness of Joseph, God was busy turning the human disfavour to His own favour through Pharaoh. Likewise, it was the same act of favourable forgetting that led to the mistreatment of Joseph’s love and affection by his own brothers; and the misjudgement of Joseph’s loyalty and uprightness by Potiphar. Notwithstanding, the steadfastness of God’s favour and presence throughout these hardships never cease. Someone has rightly said concerning faith in God, “When man is down to nothing, God is always up to something”. Therefore, a faultful forgetting of man is always a favourable forgetting of God for those who absolutely trust in the fulfillment of His promises.
