Certain Calamity
“And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “You shall certainly drink! For behold, I begin to bring calamity on the city which is called by My name, and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished, for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth,” says the LORD of hosts.’”
Jeremiah 25:28-29 NKJV

Intoxicating drinks have the reputation for attracting people who desire temporary blindness to unwanted calamity in life. However, everyone knows that temporal denial of any sorrowful future brings no real solution or escape from the impending calamity. Obviously, intoxication is the strategy of the devil to denial his captives of the possibility of finding genuine solution to their problems. Whereas, God’s invitations to the cup of drinks or controversy remind the heart about the certainty of His impending Judgment. Unexpected controversies in life are necessarily unappealing to both the wicked and wayfaring folks, but they provide clear reminder of the fact that God’s Judgment is without compromise. Therefore, the LORD of hosts said “For behold, I begin to bring calamity on the city which is called by My name, and should you be utterly unpunished?”. This is rather a cup of inquisition, instead of the usual cup filled with intoxicating drinks. It is a concern call on human readiness for divine judgement. If the calamity on God’s chosen city and people is too expedient, the final destruction and destination of the wicked or the forgotten nations is obviously too expensive.
