Presence Practice

“Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.” ‭‭Jonah‬ ‭1:1-3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ http://bible.com/114/jon.1.1-3.nkjv
The flesh is readily comfortable in the presence of affluence, reverence and preference, but the soul of man enjoys more the preservation of the Spirit of God. The only evidence of the Spirit in any environment is the unceasing communications between the soul and its Creator. Obviously, Jonah was in the presence of the Lord, where His Word came down with clarity of expression and instruction. Unfortunately, like it was with Jonah the son of Amittai, God's expressions and instructions are often at variant with human expectations and intentions. And no one can safely follow his own expectations and intentions in life, without a coordinated departure from the presence of the Lord. The scriptures rightly say "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding". Therefore, it is preferable to forfeit the understanding of God's expressions and instructions to retain His presence.
