Chamber Cleansing
“and I came to Jerusalem and discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God. And it grieved me bitterly; therefore I threw all the household goods of Tobiah out of the room. Then I commanded them to cleanse the rooms; and I brought back into them the articles of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense.”

Compromise through a partnership with unbelievers is often encouraged to be treated with great care, possibly with an exercise of strict boundaries. The scriptures even admonished complete abstinence from an unequal yoke with unbelievers, especially in all of the life projects; and where the seeking of the face of God is absolutely necessary for their day-to-day execution. For example, unequal yoke in marriage will later require desperate courage and the mercy of God in order to repair the resulting broken altar of prayer and consistent fellowship with God. Whereas, God rules in the affairs of His children. And He does not encourage strangers, who do not respect the sacredness of seeking the will of God and obeying His commandments, to distract His precious people from intimate with Him. Like many practices of compromise in life projects, Eliashib had compromised by allowing the occupation of strange Tobias in the chamber of the Lord. However, it is noteworthy that Nehemiah embarked on the mission of chamber cleansing with great grief, showing that his motive was not borne out of retaliation. His action was in total submission to the will of God and a sincere act of contending to retain the presence of God. Therefore, chamber cleansing of the bodies and souls in life relationship and mission projects always precede the presentation of acceptable service or sacrifices in the presence of God.
